I teach trombone, both jazz and classical.
To play the trombone (or any jazz instrument) is a special thing. To be able to play jazz is to be free, yet interestingly enough, to play with freedom requires a complex knowledge of technique, structure, and music theory. Jazz is a unique form that allows musicians to communicate and talk back and forth to one another in real time, and create stunning musical compositions by working together. I want to help you achieve that level of freedom with your instrument.
I have been playing the trombone since the 4th grade, starting in classical and concert band and eventually shifting into jazz ensembles. I then began to compete in competitions at a state level and I work to build my jazz improvisation skills by playing in local jazz ensembles to this day.
I like to begin with the fundamentals of trombone, working on technique through basic exercises, and then honing in on what style you as the student want to work on, whether it's concert, classical, or jazz. It's imperative as a student musician to love what you are playing and to have a passion for it. Along the way, students will also develop a knowledge for the form and structure of music theory, as understanding it is integral to achieving true freedom on the instrument.
I love to see how music impacts people. We make music to communicate with others, communicating thoughts, feelings, emotions… and music moves people. Whether it be in a dark jazz bar where the crowd is dancing along, or in a theatre where a concert band plays a dramatic composition that brings tears to the eyes, music has undeniable power.
