I teach lessons in piano, trumpet, guitar, and songwriting.
I believe every person has the ability to be creative, and music is a great way to tap into this. Everyone has a unique way of looking at the world and solving problems. I want to help students find their unique skill set and discover new things about themselves so that they can share their voice with the world through creativity!
My background is primarily in Jazz and improvised music, but I have experience in many different genres. I have been playing trumpet since age 7 and playing with DIY bands since I was a teenager. I harnessed a lot of my skills during my time at the New England Conservatory, where I graduated with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation. As a composer/songwriter I am constantly trying to unlearn my habits and follow my intuition. I sometimes attempt to emulate music that I am inspired by, other times I make exercises to work on new ideas—or I just try and work from as fresh a slate as possible, letting my subconscious and intuition guide the evolution in my work.
My style of teaching is individualized with each student. Everyone has different preferred learning styles, as well as different attention spans, so I try to engage students in ways that meet their needs. In general I like to categorize broad concepts of what you want to improve on, and tackle them through specific and pointed exercises. Identifying a big goal, then breaking it up into smaller achievable goals. I encourage creativity and intuition in the learning process, and want students to follow things that excite them. Ultimately I want to help students become their own best teachers by being able to figure out what they want to improve upon, and create their own practice to work towards this goal.
My friends! Surrounding myself with people working on creative projects keeps me inspired. Also pursuing and consuming art; watching movies, going to performances, attending museums, cooking elaborate meals etc…
